Here are some hi-resolution photos of the Trow and Holden manufacturing plant taken around the turn of the century (the 19th century that is). The machines were all run off line shafts, pulleys and belts and a water wheel was the main source of power. Anyone who has visited us will tell you the shipping room looks pretty much the same today. Expand your screen the detail is amazing!

Most stone will split cleanly if the proper breaking technique is used. Wedges and shims (plugs and feathers) have been used for eons in the stone industry and are still the most effective and economical tools for splitting stone. This video will show you how to use them.

    I am doing amateur stonework at home. In Australia, far from T&H agents in the big cities. And I don’t have the professional’s budget either. But I follow to learn, and at least when choosing among inferior tools, get ones that are at least a little bit closer to the mark.

    I like hiking... and there are some local trails where I trim the trees and bushes anonymously as a bit of volunteer work... I also try to relocate some of the more dangerous tripping hazard stumps and stones on the trails... But there are a few large shark fin type stones (ones that are make for perfect face plants) that are just appendages of much larger stones, otherwise I would just prybar them out of the trail and toss them to the side... Most are basalt but there are a few granite ones too... I've seen videos where these chisels cut granite really well, I was wondering how well they work on basalt?

    Nice demo. I live about 20 km from a dormant volcano. I have a lot that is populated with a large number of big sub-surface basalt rocks (very hard). I use 5/8" wedges and feathers. I just want them gone, and with my obsessive compulsive personality disorder that makes me run for my drill whenever I find one . I space the wedges at 4 -6 " and 98% break cleanly. However some of the rocks even at 2-3" spacing seem behave like sponges inside, in the sense there is no stress buildup like the other rocks and they won't split cleanly and just absorb the punishment. Same type of rock, same appearance but different berhavior. Then I return to reality, even though I am obsessed with defeating it and change my strategy and rather than go for removing the entire rock I settle for chipping off chunks despite the absense of defined cleavage planes, I continue to knock off chunks until it is low enough in the ground to be less of a problem. I then move on but continue to be puzzled as to why the same type of rock behaves so differently from identical rocks. By the way I dig around the rocks before the splitting operation to provide space for the rock to expand as I hammer the wedges.

    I sharpen knives, wood carving tools, and gardening tools professionally. One of my customers is a stone mason and he brought me a couple of his carbide tipped chisels that were very worn down at the tip, no edge left on them at all. I thought for sure I could restore the edge on them with a 10" diameter, 180 grit, CBN wheel mounted on my TORMEK T8. This worked okay but I was notified by the vendor of the CBN that they should NEVER be used on carbide...ugh. I purchased the Diamond Swivel sharpening system from Trow & Holden...what a difference! The diamond pads restored the chisels to new condition very easily, put a slight bevel/radius on all the edges and my customer was super happy with the results. Thank you.

    • @normakley892

      The 2 lb Hammer Point is 1-3/4" diameter x 4" long and the 4 lb Hammer Point is 2" diameter x 5-1/4" long.

    "The chisel shall have a round shank and be hand held in place in the carving tool with no retainer. A round shank permits the chisel blade to be oriented independent of the tool, an essential feature that is impossible with square-shank tools. The absence of a retainer, or any mechanical connection, enables the user to defeat power of the tool immediately by pulling the chisel away from the piston, without any other action. Precision and control is affected by the tool design enabling one hand to operate the tool, while the other manipulates the chisel. Importantly, this tool was developed as a finishing instrument to sculpt stone for hours at a time. " {From *The Use of Pneumatic Tools in Repointing Historic Masonry* APT Communiqué, Vol XV (1), Technical Note 8, 1985 - Philip C. Marshall / Author}

    You don't even have a locking chuck on the chisel/Chisel body? Seems like that would be a good idea. All Impact tools have this small feature. Correct me if I'm wrong but without that rubber strap doesn't the Chisel just fall out of the tool?

    How deep should I drill the hole? And is it of any benefit to drill a 'pilot hole' much deeper (deeper that the hole that the wedge and feathers will go into) just to help encourage the splitting? This is for getting rid if a concrete curb, no finesse necessary, just expediency.

    • @UpcomingJedi
      @UpcomingJedi Год назад

      Just drill a bit longer than the wedges. No sense working overtime.

    I only know about brick hammers. I have just bought the Vaughan Bon brick hammer after having the one I bought as a apprentice stolen. (The wooden handle ones are virtually impossible to find in the UK.) I have tried most brick hammers as a replacement but after 30 years, I bit the bullet and imported one from America. It was just a good as I remember, just the best brick hammer ever made. Forget all the fancy handles they try to sell you, it is just marketing because wooden handles are more expensive to produce. A good wooden handle will absorb vibration better than anything out there.
